Netradar Hybrid Measurement Technology

Revolutionizing Network Performance Analytics

Netradar's Hybrid Measurement Technology seamlessly integrates passive and active measurement methods to deliver precise, real-world insights into network performance. This innovative approach empowers mobile operators, regulators, and enterprises to proactively identify and address network issues, ensuring optimal user experiences.

The Hybrid Approach: Combining Passive and Active Measurements

Passive Monitoring

Continuously observes user data traffic to assess real-time bitrates without introducing synthetic loads.

Active Probing

Employs minimal latency probes during actual data transfers to measure latency and jitter continuously.

Active vs. Passive Network Measurements:

Why Neither is Enough

In mobile network analytics, measuring user experience is critical—but the two main methods, active and passive, each have limitations.

Active Measurements

Active measurements simulate traffic using speed tests or small file downloads from CDNs to measure top speeds and latency. While useful for benchmarking and issue diagnosis, they consume significant battery and data, aren’t scalable for 24/7 use, and can be manipulated by traffic prioritization. They also reflect performance at a single moment—not over time.

Passive measurements

Passive measurements, on the other hand, monitor real user traffic with low resource impact and allow continuous, large-scale data collection. But they lack context— providing no clear reason for performance issues or insight into network capacity limits.

The problem

Both methods alone fall short. Active is too costly and narrow; passive lacks depth. As a result, operators miss the full picture and struggle to proactively address user experience issues before customers complain.

Introducing the Netradar’s Hybrid Measurement Advantage

To bridge the gap between active and passive measurements, Netradar developed a hybrid methodology - a novel technique aligned with IETF RFC 7799- that captures the best of both worlds.

By passively monitoring real user traffic and intelligently injecting lightweight latency probes, we deliver continuous insights into network speed, stability, and congestion— without synthetic speed tests or heavy data loads. Our proprietary algorithms detect when real traffic is impacted, revealing true network limitations as experienced by users 24/7.

With just ~5MB/month (0.05% of data usage) per device, Netradar’s hybrid approach enables scalable, accurate, and user-centric monitoring, making it ideal for proactive performance management, smarter optimization and AI-driven faster troubleshooting- before customers even notice a problem

Why It Matters

Netradar’s hybrid methodology gives operators:
