NTT docomo case study

The NTT Challenge

Ensuring a great mobile experience for tens of thousands of users at a single event is no easy task. NTT faced major pressure at the F1 Grand Prix in Suzuka — traditional drive testing couldn’t match the scale, speed, or user behaviour at the venue.

The Approach

To gain real-time visibility into network performance, NTT embedded Netradar’s SDK into their field engineer apps. This allowed them to crowdsource live data on 4G/5G experience from inside and around the venue.

The system was powered by a DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network) model, enabling transparent data collection with user consent.

The Results

  • 24,000 experience data points collected — 800× more than legacy manual methods
  • Heatmaps identified weak zones and fallback areas
  • Engineers used real-world simulations to place temporary base stations precisely
  • Over ¥5M saved in field labour in the Tokai region alone

Nationwide scale-up potential: over ¥100M in annual OPEX savings
